LES Philippines Elects New Officers and Directors; Conducts “Forum on IP Valuation” with LESI President Alan Lewis

At the Annual General Assembly held on 24 June 2011, LES Philippines elected their new officers and directors for the term 2011 to 2013. Former directors and past presidents of the LES Philippines likewise expressed their interest to become members of the Council of Advisers, a recently established body tasked to provide guidance to the current directors and officers.

On 11 July 2011, the new LES Philippines officers and directors, in partnership with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPO-PHL) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), held their very first activity after their election, which is the “Forum on IP Valuation.”

IPO-PHL Director General Ricardo Blancaflor, and 2011-2013 LES Philippines President, Ferdinand M. Negre, welcomed the participants to the event. Engr. Merle Opeña of DOST talked about the developments on IP valuation in the Philippines and the Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009. LES International President, Mr. Alan Lewis, in his keynote presentation, gave an overview of the Licensing Executives Society (LES), and explained the basics of IP Valuation to the participants. He highlighted the importance of licensing in a growing country and the various methods by which intellectual property can be given value. After the open forum, Mr. Lewis proceeded to induct the new members, directors and officers of LES Philippines.

The forum was organized in line with the Stakeholders’ Consultation on the Guidelines on IP Valuation, Commercialization and Information Sharing conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), IPO-PHL, and DOST on 28 June 2011. The forum attracted various stakeholders from the legal community, the business and consumer products industry, the academe, and the research and development sector. After the forum and while coffee and snacks were being served, several of the participants applied on the spot for membership in LES Philippines.

After the successful  Forum on IP Valuation, LES Philippines aims to continue its involvement in the growing field of IP commercialization by participating in the 5th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week to be held on 10-12 August 2011 at Bacolod City, Philippines, with the theme “Convergence in Divergence: Innovations for Better Health.” The LES Philippines has been invited to conduct a workshop on technology commercialization at the three-day conference.
